IRMAA appeal after work stoppage
On Form SSA 44 this is work stoppage. We do not file. Social Security decides.
Work stoppage on Form SSA 44 covers a full or partial stop in work. That includes retirement, a layoff, the end of a contract, or a leave when you are not doing the old job.
It is not limited to firing, and it is not a different event from retirement. Social Security printed one box for this.
You may ask them to use a more recent tax year if MAGI dropped enough to matter for IRMAA. They decide. We do not file.

What this event is
Use work stoppage when you stopped work, fully or in part. If you still work the same job but with less pay or fewer hours, read the work reduction page instead.
A short gap between jobs is not automatically enough. The form is about a life event and a more recent MAGI that maps to a lower IRMAA tier.
If you later took a new job
A new job at lower pay can still sit next to a work stoppage at the old job. Document the stop at the prior work. The income worksheet still has to show a more recent MAGI.
Unemployment benefits can count toward MAGI. They may still be lower than the old salary, or they may not change the IRMAA tier. That is a numbers question, not a slogan.
What Social Security lists as proof
These are SSA’s examples for this event, not a promise they will accept your file. Official instructions live on ssa.gov.
- An original signed statement from your employer; copies of pay stubs; or original or certified documents that show a transfer of your business.
- If you do not have those, SSA may accept your signed statement on Form SSA-44, under penalty of perjury, that you fully or partially stopped working.

Check IRMAA is independent of the Social Security Administration, CMS, and Medicare. This is not a government website. SSA decides whether to use more recent income.
