Is retirement a separate SSA 44 event?

No. Retirement is work stoppage on Form SSA 44. Use that box, and attach the work stoppage evidence Social Security lists.

I retired last year. Is it too late?

You can still send Form SSA 44. The question is whether a more recent tax year reflects the stop in work and whether MAGI maps to a lower IRMAA tier. There is no promise that waiting or filing fast changes the result.

Do retirement account withdrawals hurt the request?

Withdrawals can raise MAGI. If the more recent year is still in the same IRMAA tier, Social Security may not lower the surcharge. Dollar savings are estimates only if they agree.

What if my spouse is still working?

If you file jointly, a spouse’s wages can still be in MAGI. Work stoppage describes your work, not a pass to use only one person’s income on a joint return.

Retirement is one of the most common reasons people look up IRMAA. On Form SSA 44, retirement is not its own box. It is work stoppage.

Social Security may still be using MAGI from a year when you had wages. If you have stopped work, you may ask them to use a more recent tax year. They decide whether the Medicare surcharge changes.

Which box to use

Check work stoppage when you fully or partly stopped working, including retirement. If you kept working but with fewer hours or less pay, work reduction may fit better.

Do not invent a ninth life event called retirement. SSA’s form does not have that box. Using the wrong event is a reason they may refuse the request.

Income after you stop wages

Pensions, Social Security benefits, and withdrawals from retirement accounts can still count toward MAGI. Stopping a job does not always mean IRMAA goes away. The question is whether a more recent MAGI maps to a lower published tier.

If you file jointly, the return Social Security uses can still include a spouse’s income. The form is not a way to ignore a joint return that still applies.

An original signed statement from your employer; copies of pay stubs; or original or certified documents that show a transfer of your business.
If you do not have those, SSA may accept your signed statement on Form SSA-44, under penalty of perjury, that you fully or partially stopped working.
