IRMAA appeal after marriage
On Form SSA 44 this is marriage. We do not file. Social Security decides.
Marriage is one of the eight life events on Form SSA 44. It is not a coupon for a lower Medicare premium. Joint MAGI is often higher, not lower.
Use this event when marriage is what happened and you are asking Social Security to use a more recent tax year that reflects the new filing status and MAGI. If MAGI did not drop to a lower IRMAA tier, a packet will not help.
If income dropped because you or your spouse stopped work, that other event may be the one that belongs on the form.

What this event is
The box is marriage. SSA’s evidence list is a marriage certificate or a certified public record of marriage.
After you file jointly, IRMAA uses the joint ladder and joint MAGI for that tax year. That can raise the surcharge. An increase caused only by adding a spouse’s income is not a reason this site will sell you a packet.
When a check might still say yes
A yes on our check still requires a qualifying event and a more recent MAGI that maps to a lower tier than the MAGI Social Security already used. Marriage can be the event on the form even when another change in the household drove the income drop.
We do not advise anyone to delay or rush a marriage for IRMAA. That is a personal and legal decision beyond this packet.
