Work Stoppage or Reduction Due to Health Circumstances

Health problems can force you to stop working or cut back your hours long before you planned. When that happens, your income drops. But Social Security may still be calculating your Medicare premium based on the higher income you earned before the health issue began.

That is where Form SSA 44 comes in. A work stoppage or work reduction due to health circumstances is a qualifying life event. It allows Social Security to use your current income instead of the older tax return.

You need to prove the reduction. A letter from your employer, a disability statement, or medical documentation showing that you stopped working or reduced your hours because of your health. The evidence needs to be clear and tied to the specific reason. A vague note is not enough.

The other thing you need is proof of your current income. That usually means a recent tax return, a pension statement, or documentation of any Social Security or disability benefits you are receiving.

The form itself is not complicated. It asks about the life event, your prior income, and your current income. The hard part is knowing which documents to attach and how to describe the situation so Social Security does not come back asking for more.

Medicare premiums already feel expensive. You should not have to pay more because of an income you no longer receive.

If your health forced you to stop working or cut back, and you are paying an IRMAA surcharge, you have options.
